Outdoor Education for Curriculum Integration

As spring coming, the purple butterflies fly over 300 kilometers “back” to Miaoli county from the south of Taiwan. Why is it "back"? According to the scientific research, they migrated to the south from northern Taiwan last autumn.

The ecological marvel is as famous as the Monarch butterflies that can migrate long distances in North America. Don’t doubt! It’s the most valuable learning resource for children in Miaoli county. For the reason, we set the educational ideas. We should help children reconcile with nature. We also should help children obtain multiple intelligence from nature.

This record is an outdoor learning trip of “Visiting Spring” project. We went to the coast forest in Jhunan to visit various creatures that symbolize spring such as fragrant blossoms, butterflies, birds, squirrels, dragonflies, lizards, etc. Children are always full of the sense of wonder when facing nature. (Link to another record: https://ecodashan.blogspot.tw/2017/04/visiting-spring.html) The sense of wonder is the core of the project. Teacher Wu and teacher Hsu designed the project with several areas including Mandarin, science, social studies, arts and mathematics. Children obtain not only the various local knowledge but also the core competences of “National Grade 1-9 Curriculum Guidelines”.

In the classroom, the 1st and 2nd grade students read some books about spring. Teachers also guided them to study the purple butterflies through books, videos and discussion. Outside the door, children try to observe, feel, smell, listen and touch the “Spring” on campus and in the coast forest.

The topic books of spring
After outdoor learning, children wrote some sentences, even more the children’s poetry to describe spring. Besides, they also tried to do the scientific drawing to show their outcomes of efforts. They were just like those naturalists such as Charles Robert Darwin(UK) and Jean-Henri Fabre(France) in 19th century.
