大山腳: The practice of introducing “Maker” concept into environmental education

【Environmental Education Annual Conference in Jeonju City, Korea（June 1~3, 2017）】

Abstract

This program takes environmental issues as the core and introduces the concept of “Maker” to carry out environmental education through hands-on work. It cultivates students’ ability to solve the problem. Furthermore, students share their works with partner school in USA to expand our students' environmental thinking and vision. This is the representation of “Learning from Local, Synchronizing the World”.

Some practical examples the school has done to introduce Maker concept into environmental education are listed as the following:

(1) Students in the school make hands-on pencils from tree branches found in the local places and mail them to the partner school in the US to share the process of creating.

(2) The partner school, Tequesta Trace MS in USA, mail their hands-on work of "Folk Art Project" to our school, which let us gain a deeper understanding about American culture.

(3) After the project of "environmental-friendly cypress chopsticks" hands-on work, students show American teachers how to make Chinese chopsticks from recycled wood.

(4) Students build hen house from the old tables and chairs in the classroom. This is a practice for waste reuse.

(5) The partner school students carry out the photojournalism project of “Investigation of South Florida Habitats”. Then, our students study and present the English PPTs from their work as for exploring Florida’s ecology.

(6)After ecological survey for campus and community, students use the "Scientific Drawing" to record various creatures and share the results with partner school in the United States through the internet.
