The children of grade 3 class A are very cute. After planting vegetables the first time in the last semester, they are trying to challenge organic gardening this semester one more time! They discussed some ways about non-toxic insect control and prevention with their natural science teacher, and they are going to carrying out these methods by science experiments through inquiry-based approach.

According to the unit "Growing of Vegetables"of the third-grade natural science textbook, the learning content include the body structure of vegetables, planting techniques, and methods about taking care of vegetables. Director Huang designed and added the “core competence-based” learning of "organic gardening" to make children integrate knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes into learning to practice the core competence. This is just the interest of “Learning by Doing” which Dr. Dewey said.

We plant vegetables by an environmentally friendly idea because we are learning to coexist with the Nature. We don’t use chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides in the garden. Although the output of crops cannot be compared with the amount of traditional farming method, it is for a long-term ecological balance. Helping protect the environment, we can make sure getting the sustainable food. The planting steps are:
1.
Site preparation: Get rid of the weeds and stones.
2.
Fertilization: Sprinkle the organic fertilizer and mix it with the soil.
3.
Sowing: Sow the seeds and cover them with soil to prevent bird eating.
4.
Watering: Water with the sprinkler and avoid using the water pipe.
5.
Pests prevention: Use chili pepper water, coffee grounds, or build prevention
nets.
6.
Harvest: Enjoy the vegetables at school lunch or share with the community care
base.

The inquiry-based experiment that children are going to conduct is: Which insect control and prevention method is the most effective way? They experiment with several methods, including sprinkling homemade pepper water, or coffee grounds, constructing prevention nets and growing some shallots which’s smell can prevent insects. Of course, they also reserved a ridge of vegetables without any measures.
