Albert Einstein said “Learning is an experience. Everything else is just information”. John Dewey, the Master of Pragmatism, advocated the idea “Learning by doing”. Now, we are carrying out the ideas that Einstein and Dewey talked about.

Learning by doing: The Unique Christmas Tree |
As the Christmas Day approaching, each child made a mini and unique Christmas tree. What materials did we use to create? The main materials are environmentally friendly such as pine cones and recycled wood. We collected the pine cones on campus in autumn and recycled some wood from discarded desks and chairs in school.

The learning process is the application of the mathematics and the engineering. Children calculated the size of the Christmas tree’s “base” and “trunk” and sawed them. Then they sandpapered the wood to be smooth. After that, children used the hand drill to drill a hole in the base wood and the pine cone.

The next step, they looked for a twig to be the “trunk” which could connect the base wood and the pine cone closely. The last step in this stage is to glue the base wood, twig, and pine cone. Then the mini Christmas tree had been produced.

Decorating the mini Christmas tree was the final work. Some children colored the tree white, green, yellow, pink or gold. Some children glued some stars/bears on the trees. They are not only the carpenters but also the artists. Through the beautifying process, all the children felt the happy atmosphere of the Christmas.
